Carol Speaks...

Curator's note: Below are Carol Marin's last remarks as a WMAQ-TV news anchor. They concluded the 10 pm broadcast of 5/17/97.

"This is that place in the newscast where Ron [Magers] always wraps up the night with his kicker.

He has given it to me tonight...so that I can say goodbye.

The best newsrooms are the one's filled with passion and debate. "This one has overflowed on both counts this week.

19-years ago when I walked in the doors of this station...I knew that I was coming to one of the best operations anywhere...and in my home- town at that.

They are reporters, producers, writers, directors, photographers, editors, maintenance people, saleswomen and men, promotion people, makeup artists, graphic artists...and so many others who have set a standard of excellence at Channel 5 (WMAQ).

From the mailroom to the master control I am indebted to all the fine professionals here who made me better than I otherwise might have been.

I am especially in the debt of Don Moseley, Wendy Frame and Susan Evans who have been my producers, and closest collaborators.

From Bangkok to Belfast to Chicago City council to Cicero... This 19 years has been a marvelous ride...and in the front seat beside me for so much of the way has been Ron Magers...a partner, a friend, a co- conspirator...and the best anchor and communicator I have ever known.

But my deepest...most abiding gratitude goes to those of you who watched...and those of you who trusted us enough to share your stories...so that we could tell them here. Words are not adequate to express the thanks I feel.

That's our news tonight...we thank you for joining us. Good Night."
